Our History
In 2023 a friend of one of our founding members was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer. When treatment options were exhausted, she chose MAID (medical assistance in dying). Due to the abrupt timing of her decision, along with her desire for an organic burial and the fact that she left no will, many complications and confusions arose. The outcome was ugly, undignified and extremely stressful for her surviving family.
This situation prompted our founding member to to research regulations applicable to fair practices in the funeral industry in Nova Scotia. During the course of this research, a connection was made with the US-based Funeral Consumers Alliance (FCA). The FCA’s primary focus is advocating for fair practices in the funeral industry. They do this by promoting death literacy in 32 states (as of 2025).
There was no consumer funeral advocacy group in Canada at that time. Our founding member decided to establish a similar organization in Canada. The FCA agreed to assist in every way possible.
With the enlistment of other like-minded people, the Canadian Funeral Consumers Association was registered as a non-profit organization with the Registration of Joint Stock Companies in Nova Scotia, in March 2026.
We are following in the well established footsteps of the FCA by focusing our attention on building death and grief literacy in our communities.
